If there’s one thing lovebirds are good at, it’s keeping you entertained with their beauty for hours at most. These birds come in the most beautiful colors and combinations that are sure to make you fall in love.
They are the epitome of true love as they are monogamous and mate for life with their partners. Their mating begins with courtship and can continue throughout their life, which is usually 15 years.
When they are separated or their partner dies, their behavior can be compared to depression. That’s how devoted they are to their companion!
Lovebirds are also known for public displays of affection, hence the name. They love to feed on each other, especially after separation or after a stressful period.
There are many species of lovebirds in the world, but their homeland is Africa. Most of these species have bright green bodies and differently colored heads, similar to the hanging parrots, which are mainly found in Asia.
They come in a beautiful range of colors such as white, turquoise, grey, black, and lavender – and they all go together beautifully, no matter what the combination is. The most common and beautiful ones that you’ll probably see the most are the pink-faced ones, which come in the most mesmerizing shades!
Meet pink-faced lovebirds in the brightest hues
The pink-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis), sometimes known as the pink-collared or peach-faced lovebird, is undoubtedly the most popular lovebird species found not only in the United States but throughout the world. Because they breed like rabbits, many color mutations have evolved, including but not limited to creminos, lutinos, pieds, orangefaces, fallows, whitefaces, cinnamons, and violets.
They are the embodiment of true love, hence their name. Lovebirds mate for life and can become depressed when separated from their partner.
They are monogamous in nature and reach sexual maturity at ten months of age. Their mating begins with courtship and can continue throughout their life, which is approximately 12–15 years.
Pink-faced lovebirds originally had a beautiful green body, blue rump, horn-colored beak, and gray feet.
As the population grew, they began to use more varied color combinations: white, turquoise, black, lavender, and yellow.
Their character and intelligence can be compared to parrots, as well as their appearance.
However, they are significantly smaller and less noisy than their larger counterparts. They are native to the forests of Africa but are now easily found all over the world, whether in the wild or in someone else’s backyard.
They are androgynous, and men and women are usually difficult to distinguish from each other. Needless to say, they are both excellent breeders and parents.
Most lovebird species grow to between 10-14cm, and these pink-faced species are actually the largest of them all, as they can potentially reach 15cm in size.
In the wild, they prefer to live at altitudes of up to 1600 meters above sea level and are usually found in forests, semi-deserts, and high mountains. Their habitat depends on access to water.
They usually only eat seeds and berries, and when there is a lot of food available they can gather in flocks. However, they can also be pests of agricultural lands as they like to feed on crops such as switchgrass.
When breeding, females are usually responsible for building the nest, where they lay three to six eggs and incubate them for about twenty-three days. She will then care for the chicks until they reach six weeks of age, and the father will care for them until they are ready to fly.
